Mervi is an associate professor of entrepreneurship at the University of Tartu and head of the chair of entrepreneurship. She wrote her doctoral thesis on social entrepreneurship in Estonia. Since 2007, Mervi has been teaching entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship to students at the University of Tartu, including in Viljandi, Narva and Pärnu. She is inspired by new initiatives and companies starting from entrepreneurship courses. Hand in hand with teaching, she has also developed the methodology of entrepreneurship education. Her research topics are focused on social entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship education and the entrepreneurial university. She has also represented Estonia internationally as an expert in social entrepreneurship. e.g. in the OCDE working group and belongs to several international groups related to social entrepreneurship.

Mervi has also been closely associated with the non-profit sector, being the head of a pan-Estonian youth organization for 8 years and also has entrepreneurial experience with several companies.
